Get Oriented - Use the Big Dipper to Find Polaris & Cassiopeia & Others

I typically start off with the Big Dipper when doing public observing nights. It is great for getting oriented, especially locating Polaris. Once that is done it is much easier to find other stuff.
Polaris or the North Star is located 447 light-years away in Ursa Minor
(Polaris is a triple star system)
Arcturus is located 36.7 light-years away in the constellation Bootes.
Spica is located (250 light-years away) in the Virgo constellation.
(Spica is a double star system)
To Find the Big Dipper!
Looking North in the higher latitudes, it is typically visible at some point in the night and highest in the Winter. However, it may not be visible at certain times of night in the lower latitudes.
