Google Sheets Tips and Tricks

Welcome to part 1 of my google sheets tips and trick series. Focusing on time-saving tips to help you work more efficiently.

Tip 1

You can quickly create a new google sheet by going to the address bar in your internet browser and typing “Sheets.new”. Press enter and a new google sheet will be created.

Tip 2

If you have a large data set that takes a long time to scroll to the bottom of, you can use the hotkey to jump to the last cell with a value by selecting a cell in your data set and then pressing the ctrl key and down arrow on your keyboard. If you’re a mac user, use command down. To get back up to the top you can use ctrl up.

Tip 3

If you need to select a large set of data, instead of clicking and dragging you can also use the ctrl, shift, down hotkey to select an entire column or row.

Tip 4

If you want to select an entire data set select any cell in the data set and click ctrl-A

Tip 5

You can freeze rows and or columns so headers remain visible when scrolling. You can do this by going through the VIEW, FREEZE menu, and selecting what columns or rows you would like to freeze but you can also do this by dragging these dark lines.

Tip 6

If you need to delete a row or column you can do so by right-clicking on the row and selecting “Delete Row” but there is a shortcut by highlighting the row and using the CTR Minus hotkey. If you need to add a row you can use the ctrl plus hotkey.

Tip 7

You can copy and paste or cut and paste cells by right-clicking and selecting cut or copy and then right-clicking another cell and selecting paste. This can be done faster selecting a cell and using the ctrl c hotkey to copy or the ctrl x hotkey to cut and then select the cell that you would like to paste to and use the hotkey ctrl v to paste.

Tip 8

If you need to fill a row with values you can enter the value once and highlight the cells below that need to be filled and use the Ctrl D hotkey to auto-fill.

Tip 9

You can quickly undo your last change by using the Ctrl z hotkey and redo your last action by using the Ctrl Y hotkey.

Tip 10

There are shortcuts to formatting numbers that can be helpful in google sheets. If you select a cell with a number value you can change the format to time by using the Ctrl-Shift 2 hotkey. You can format it as a date by using the ctrl shift 3 hotkey. Ctrl shift 4 will change it to currency, Ctrl ghost 5 to a percentage. Control shift 6 to scientific notation, and control shift 1 to get it back to the default number format. Finally, ctrl shift 7 will put a border around the selected cell. This also works with multiple cells at once if multiple cells are selected.
