Paul VALERY - Why dance?, Julie Cloarec-Michaud
Presentation: "Well, dance now! We dance when there's nothing left to do, because dancing is useless. It means using your body to perform actions that are useless in everyday life. Bergson would say that dance does not belong to the realm of intelligence, calculating and efficient, but to the realm of intuition, creative and distracted. This intuition which, for Bachelard, works like a star, always exploring new paths but which keeps coming back to its centre. So, yes, dancing is useless, but wouldn't this intimate exploration, in the first person, cut off from the ordinary world, be the right measure of our human capacities, freed from their practical and utilitarian limitation? Wouldn't dancing then be a way of rediscovering the right measure of man, his "just to the body" relationship?
