That's HJ's muscles for you. The take-off is just an extra. And yes, the throttle is loosen all the way.
Priming event at 0:50 - I talked to an "Engines" engineer and apparently there are some dangers with priming using throttle as the fuel can leak via carby into the air intake filter paper.
