Story of Jhalkari Bai
Jhalkari Bai was an incredible woman warrior of India. Said to have borne an uncanny resemblance to Rani Lakshmi Bai, Jhalkari Bai disguised herself as the queen and took command of the Jhansi army. A prominent fighter during the Rebellion of 1857, Jhalkari was a woman driven by sheer fortitude and courage was able to strike fear into the hearts of the British army and leave behind a rich legacy for millions to emulate. The legend of Jhalkari Bai remains in the popular memory of the people of Bundelkhand over centuries. Her life, especially her heroism fighting the East India Company army to protect the Queen, continues to be praised in various Bundelkhandi folklores.
The name of Queen Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, who died for the country, is in the hearts of every Indian today. But few people know that Rani Lakshmi Bai was accompanied by another daughter of the country, who did not have the crown of Queen, but still fought for the soil of her country and left her indelible mark on the pages of history. Jhalakari Bai was no less than any skilled and experienced warrior. It is said that, like Rani Laxmi Bai, her bravery was talked about from her childhood. When Jhalakari came to Jhansi, she once went to the Jhansi Fort to pay homage to the Maharani, along with other women from the village, on the occasion of Gauri Puja. When Queen Lakshmibai saw him there, she was stunned. Jhalakari looked just like Rani Laxmibai. The Maharani was so impressed with him that she immediately ordered Jhalakari to join the Durga Sena. Jhalakari became so proficient that she was soon made the commander of the Durga Sena. Not only in the army, but also in person, Jhalakari often supported Queen Lakshmi Bai. On several occasions he evaded the British, in the absence of the Queen. Because of their similarities, no one could tell who was Rani Lakshmi Bai and who was Jhalkari Bai.
