Island Nations: Accessibility to Climate and Development Finance
Island Nations, especially those within the Small Island Developing Nations (SIDS) are at the front and center of impacts from climate change. At the Carnegie Endowment and Sasakawa Peace Foundation’s annual islands dialogue in 2022, the questions around accessibility to climate finance and the frustrations toward existing frameworks emerged as the central theme among the island nations of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. As the 2023 IMF - World Bank Spring Meetings kick off this week, policymakers will have an opportunity to debate and discuss the frameworks of climate finance. As climate change increasingly becomes an important pillar for foreign policy engagements and great power competition, bigger powers must understand the realities of SIDS nations and the challenges in accessing international climate finance.
