In this video, I’ll show you how to view AVIF images and enable thumbnail previews for them on your Windows 11 PC.
By default, Windows 11 doesn’t associate any app with the AVIF file type. Simply setting the Windows Photos app as the default won’t work—you’ll still need to install an additional component.
AVIF files use the AV1 image format and are stored within a HEIF container. To properly open and view AVIF images in the Photos app, you need to install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store.

Once installed, AVIF images will open just like other common formats such as JPG, JPEG, or PNG.
Steps To View AVIF Images On Windows 11:
1. Right click on your AVIF image file
2. Click Properties
3. Click Change
4. Find and select Photos
5. Click Set default
6. Click Apply and then Ok
7. Double click on your AVIF image to open up your image in the Photos app
8. Click on the hyperlink text Download and install it now.
9. Click Yes
10. The Microsoft store will then open on the AV1 Video Extension app
11. Click on the "Get" button to download and install AV1 Video Extension app
12. Close the Microsoft Store and the Photos app
13. Double click once again your AVIF image to display it in the Photos app
Note: Thumbnail previews for AVIF images will begin appearing in File Explorer—replacing the generic Photos app icon—after you restart your system.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, enabling support for both viewing AVIF images and displaying their thumbnail previews in Windows 11.
