Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a technique often performed during flexible bronchoscopy (FOB) and used to diagnose lung diseases.
Bronchoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the bronchi (the tubes that carry air to the lungs). This procedure is usually performed using a thin, flexible tube called a bronchoscope. The bronchoscope is usually inserted into the airways through the patient's mouth or nose.
Bronchoalveolar lavage is a procedure performed during bronchoscopy. BAL is used to obtain samples from the inner surfaces of the bronchi and alveoli (the air sacs in the lungs). This procedure is used to elucidate the etiology of lung diseases, establish a diagnosis, and plan treatment.
During bronchoalveolar lavage, a sterile solution (usually saline) is injected into a specific bronchus or bronchial region through the bronchoscope. This solution is then aspirated and collected. The collected fluid is used as a sample for microscopic examination and laboratory tests.
Bronchoalveolar lavage is usually performed under light sedation, meaning patients are awake but relaxed and comfortable. The procedure is generally painless, although patients often experience mild discomfort in their throat.
Bronchoalveolar lavage can be helpful in diagnosing a number of lung diseases, particularly infections, cancers, and interstitial lung diseases.
