Three years ago, we arrived in Portugal with a van and a dream. Today, our abandoned 200-year-old stone watermill is almost a home.
After 11 years of van life, we were searching for stability, community, and a place to park forever (or at least for a good long while). What we found was a crumbling stone mill surrounded by 7.5 acres of wild land — and a renovation that tested our marriage, patience, and endurance.
In this full transformation recap, we share the complete journey of renovating our off-grid watermill in the Algarve mountains — from overgrown terraces, eucalyptus fire risk, and drilling a 107-meter-deep well… to rebuilding the roof, restoring original stone walls, installing radiant heating, custom wooden windows, underground drainage systems, and finally painting the interior.
