Windows Startup and Shutdown Sounds (no betas and codenames) [2025]
Some points:
Windows 1.0 - 3.0 (except the Multimedia Extensions version of Windows 3.0) have no sounds (even startup and shutdown sounds) since the .WAV file type didn't exist until 1991.
Windows Server versions starting with Windows Server 2008 have shutdown sound non-functional even if the sound is set for the "Exit Windows" event and the Windows Audio service is set to automatically start with the OS.
The Windows 8 - 8.1 startup sound you have heard in most videos is incorrect. It's actually the unused logon sound (Windows Logon.wav), although the corresponding sound event is no longer functional even if restored in the registry and have a sound set for it. The correct startup sound is the same as Windows Vista and 7, although it's disabled by default.
The alleged Windows 10 startup sound is fake/incorrect. It's from the HoloLens trailer. The correct startup sound is the same as Windows Vista and 7, although it's disabled by default.
