Pay attention to the bass as we bypass
the preamp at the beginning of the chain.
Notice how despite having more distortion
the track seems more defined and clean
with the preamp engaged.
To get the color out of a preamp, we just
have to increase the INPUT signal by any
means until it exceeds the 0db threshold.
In Radiator this will increase the overall
volume which will create a second layer of
saturation on the output (fine work devs!).
By reducing OUTPUT back to Unity we
can eliminate or control this second layer.
Note that this combination of distortions is partly responsible
for the legendary sound of this plugin.
Now we can clearly hear how even a bit of
saturation can change the tone of the bass,
"magically" reducing some resonances and
increasing others (often brightness and body).
The dynamics are also more even without
sounding compressed. Each preamp has its
own compression, color and effect on the
spectrum, that's why the best designs are
collected and swapped to find the sound!
