Everyone is the puppet of someone or something. Materialists are puppets of their uncontrolled senses. The so-called scholars are puppets of their diminutive erudition. The affluents are puppets of their never-ending greed, and the destitute are puppets of their victimhood.

The above is a general analysis and may not apply to all, but the fact remains that we all are puppets of someone or something. Ultimately, all conditioned living entities are puppets of their own uncontrolled minds. Denying this fact only suggests our lack of self-awareness or self-introspection.

The best thing is to realize that we are not this material body, mind or even intelligence, but an eternal spirit soul, who is an eternal part and parcel of God. We eternally belong to Him and God eternally belongs to us. This understanding is based on the absolute platform, as declared in the teachings of Vedic literatures such as the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. When we operate on such an enlightened platform, we say no to various endorsements or titillations offered by our minds and say yes to selflessly loving and serving the Lord, which is our constitutional position.

As long as we remain stubborn, accepting ourselves to be the material body and the things in relation to the body as mine, we suffer, becoming the puppet of stringent laws of material nature, also known as the law of karma . Thus, burdened by the weight of our false ego, we remain perpetually trapped in the hard struggle of material life, verily the cycle of birth, old age, disease, and death.

However, just as the hand cannot enjoy food independently but can assimilate it indirectly by giving it to the stomach, similarly, by serving God or Lord Krishna, the living entity, who is part and parcel of the Lord, will derive unlimited happiness. It is not possible otherwise. Thus, the real platform of independence is humbly accepting to become the loving puppet of Krishna’s sweet will, for Krishna’s pleasure.

Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the institutor of ISKCON, also known as the Hare Krishna movement, founded the worldwide movement simply by accepting to become a puppet in the hands of Lord Krishna. How could such a miracle have been possible otherwise?

Srila Prabhupada, from 1965 to 1977, at the advanced age of 70, travelled the globe 14 times on lecture tours spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna and established 108 centres worldwide, which included Temples, Farm Communities, Govinda’s pure vegetarian Restaurants, Educational Institutions, a Publishing House, Community Centres and he began what has now become the world’s largest vegetarian food relief program, Hare Krishna Food for Life.

Srila Prabhupada’s most significant contributions, perhaps, are his books. He authored over 70 volumes on the Krishna Bhakti, which are highly respected by scholars for their authority, depth, fidelity to the tradition, and clarity. Several of his works are used as textbooks in numerous college courses. His writings have been translated into 76 languages. His most prominent works include Bhagavad-Gita As It Is, the 30-volume Srrimad-Bhagavatam, and the 17-volume Sri Caitanya-Charitamrita.

For millennia the teachings and the rich culture of Sanatana Dharma especially Bhakti-yoga, or Krishna Consciousness, had been hidden within the borders of India. Today, millions around the globe express their gratitude to Srila Prabhupada for revealing the timeless wisdom of Bhakti to the world. But how was it all possible? How was it possible for an old gentleman to do all these things in a span of just twelve years at such an advanced age, especially at a time when there was no venture capital, no angel funds, no private equity, no IPO, and no bank loans were taken? He literally bootstrapped to found this worldwide movement.
