Saint of the Day, January 17
The Catholic Church celebrates Saint Anthony Abbot, also known as Saint Anthony the Great, considered the father of Christian monasticism and an example of ascetic life and prayer.
Biography
Saint Anthony was born around 251 in Coma, Egypt, to a wealthy family. Orphaned at a young age, he distributed all his possessions to the poor and retreated to the desert to live a life of prayer, fasting, and penance. He was a pioneer of the hermit life and inspired many others to follow his example, becoming the founder of Christian monasticism.
Anthony spent much of his life in solitude, facing harsh demonic temptations, which are often depicted in works of art. However, he never abandoned contact with the Christian community: he gave spiritual counsel, comforted the persecuted, and opposed the Arian heresy. He died on January 17, 356, at approximately 105 years of age.

Saint Anthony Abbot is venerated as the patron saint of domestic animals and farmers. His feast day, January 17, is accompanied by blessings of animals and popular traditions related to the countryside. He is also the patron saint of monks and those who seek to live an intense spiritual life.
