☁️ Google Cloud Challenge Lab - GSP355
In this video, I'll walk through the complete solution for the Google Cloud Skills Boost Challenge Lab:
“Create and Manage Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL Instances: Challenge Lab”
This is one of the more challenging Cloud SQL labs, covering PostgreSQL database migration, Cloud SQL, Database Migration Service, IAM database authentication, and point-in-time recovery.
I spent several hours working through this lab, testing the steps, troubleshooting errors, and preparing a complete manual solution so you can follow the process from start to finish.
🧪 Lab: GSP355
🎯 Challenge Lab: Create and Manage Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL Instances
💻 Platform: Google Cloud Skills Boost
☁️ Main Topics: Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, Database Migration Service, PostgreSQL, IAM Database Authentication, Point-in-Time Recovery
In this walkthrough, we'll cover the complete challenge, including:
1. Preparing the stand-alone PostgreSQL database for migration.
2. Configuring the pglogical extension on the PostgreSQL VM.
3. Creating the PostgreSQL migration user and required permissions.
4. Preparing the orders database for migration.
5. Creating a Database Migration Service connection profile.
6. Configuring VPC Peering connectivity.
7. Creating and starting a continuous migration job.
8. Migrating PostgreSQL to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL.
9. Promoting the migrated Cloud SQL instance to a stand-alone instance.
10. Configuring Cloud SQL IAM database authentication.
11. Adding the PostgreSQL VM network to the Cloud SQL authorized networks.
12. Creating a Cloud SQL IAM user.
13. Granting SELECT permission to the IAM user.
14. Verifying database access with a SQL query.
15. Enabling point-in-time recovery.
16. Creating a database change after the recovery timestamp.
17. Using point-in-time recovery to clone the instance.
18. Creating the required `postgres-orders-pitr` instance.
19. Verifying the completed challenge lab.
🎯 CHALLENGE OVERVIEW
Cymbal Shops wants to migrate its legacy PostgreSQL inventory database to Google Cloud while maintaining data integrity, security, and reliable disaster recovery.
The challenge requires migrating the PostgreSQL `orders` database to Cloud SQL using Database Migration Service, securing the database with IAM database authentication, and configuring point-in-time recovery.
