The USS Lexington (CV-16) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943, playing a crucial role in the Pacific "Theater" during World War II. Initially named Cabot, she was renamed in honor of the original Lexington (CV-2), which was lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
During World War II, the Lexington participated in several key operations:
Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaigns (1943-1944): Supported invasions by providing air cover and striking Japanese bases.
Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 1944): Contributed to the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot," which decimated Japanese naval air power.
Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 1944): Played a significant role in what is considered one of the largest naval battles in history.
Raids on Formosa and Okinawa (1944-1945): Conducted air strikes against Japanese positions, aiding in the island-hopping campaign.
Tokyo Raids and Final Operations (1945): Supported bombing raids on Japan and provided cover for Allied operations until the war's end.
After World War II, the Lexington was decommissioned in 1947 but was recommissioned in 1955 as an attack carrier (CVA), and later as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS). In 1962, she was redesignated as a training carrier (CVT), serving primarily in this role for nearly three decades. The Lexington was finally decommissioned in 1991 after a distinguished 48-year career.
Throughout the service, the Lexington earned 11 battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. Today, the carrier is preserved as a museum ship in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she continues to educate and inspire visitors.
