The 7th-grade physics course studies the simplest type of motion—uniform motion in a straight line. With this type of motion, the velocity of a body is constant, and the body travels the same distance in any equal interval of time. Most motion, however, cannot be considered uniform. In some areas, a body may have a slower speed, and in others, a faster speed. For example, a train departing from a station begins to move faster and faster. As it approaches the station, it slows down. If the velocity of a body during non-uniform motion changes equally over any equal interval of time, the motion is called uniformly accelerated. For example, experiments have shown that the speed of any freely falling body (in the absence of air resistance) increases by approximately 9.8 m/s every second. That is, if the body was initially at rest, then one second after the start of its fall it will have a speed of 9.8 m/s, another second later it will have a speed of 19.6 m/s, another second later it will have a speed of 29.4 m/s, and so on.
The physical quantity that shows how much the speed of a body changes during each second of uniformly accelerated motion is called acceleration. ───────────────────────────────────────────
