How to integrate overlays using 'Screen' mode in Adobe Photoshop
This video briefly demonstrates how to integrate overlay layers with a brighter foreground into your working document.
In short, simply import the overlay of your choice into your working document and change the blending mode to 'screen'. This will eliminate the darker tones from the overlay layer.
Once this is done, you may use tonal adjustment layers (such as 'levels' or 'curves') to refine how visible you would like the overlay layer to be.
Don't forget to clip the tonal adjustment layers to the 'smoke' layer, or apply them directly.
