Science Is Everywhere! Find fractals in nature.
Welcome to Science Is Everywhere, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s Annual Fundraiser. We’re continuing our commitment to making science accessible to everyone, everywhere, with our second-ever virtual event. This year, we’re challenging you, San Diego, to show us that Science Is Everywhere through a photo scavenger hunt. Tag the Fleet and use the hashtag #ScienceIsEverywhere, and post your images on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
To issue the second challenge, we have two of our awesome scientists who participate in Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar, microbiologist Michelle Nolasco and archaeologist Robert Timothy. The next Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar event is coming up June 2 as part of our Science Is Everywhere celebration.
When we find a pattern and can identify why it exists, we uncover fundamental truths about our world. Fractals are patterns that repeat at different scales. For example, look at a Eucalyptus tree. Its trunk rises from the ground, and about ten feet up, it splits into two smaller branches. If you follow one of the branches, it eventually splits into two even smaller branches. Follow one of those, and guess what: it does it again, on and on. The tree follows a fractal pattern. We can find lots of other examples of branching patterns in things like rivers, lightning and the veins of leaves. Spirals are another example of repeating patterns that you find in seashells, galaxies and other swirly objects. Once you start looking for fractals, you’re bound to find them everywhere!
The top five photos will be featured in the Science Is Everywhere exhibit at the Fleet and will receive a four-pack of tickets to the Fleet! Make sure your post is public or, if you have a private profile, you can send the photo through private message. Everyone who submits a photo and/or donates to the fundraiser will be eligible to win even more prizes during our explosive Virtual Event on Thursday, June 2, at 6 p.m. Once we receive 75 photos of fractals in nature or $750 in donations to the Science Is Everywhere 2016 Annual Fundraiser, the next challenge will be unlocked!
