The Australian Aboriginal Flag
Indigenous Australians are the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander people's of Australia descended from groups that existed in Australia and surrounding islands before British colonisation .
The word Aboriginal means ' first or earliest known indigenous ' . It comes from the Latin word Aborigines meaning ' from beginning ' . The word was used in Australia to describe it's indigenous people as early as 1789 .
The Australian Aboriginal Flag represents Aboriginal Australians . It is one of the officially proclaimed flags of Australia that holds special legal and political status . It is often flown together with the National Flag .
The upper half of the flag is black in colour . The lower part of the flag is Red in colour . In the middle of the flag , there is a yellow circle .
The Black part represents the Aboriginal people of Australia while the Red part represents the Red Earth , the Red ochre used in ceremonies and Aboriginal peoples' spiritual relation to the land . The yellow circle represents the Sun which means the giver of life and protector .
