What was the French and Indian War?

The French and Indian War, part of the larger Seven Years' War between two European powers, France and Britain, was fought in a series of complex alliances across Europe, the Atlantic, and North America.

The immediate cause of the war was the conflict between the British and French colonies in North America. As the British colonies expanded westward, they began to encroach on territory claimed by France. A small skirmish in the Ohio Territory quickly escalated into a full-scale war between the two European powers.

The Seven Years' War, with its continental reach, is seen as a precursor to later World Wars. In particular, the war in North America and the tax burden it imposed on the British colonies there led directly to the American Revolution.
