Why is there a Jewish state in Russia? It was established before Israel! Up until now, I've always talked about the Turkic republics in Russia. But while we recognize Israel as the center of Jewish life, there's actually another Jewish state in Russia. This state, called the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, covers an area the size of Switzerland and is located in the Russian Far East, on the Chinese border. Its flag consists of a rainbow with seven narrow horizontal colored stripes on a white background. These seven colors symbolize the seven-branched Jewish candelabrum. This autonomous region's history dates back to the Stalin era, predating the founding of Israel. So, what is life like in this Jewish region in the Russian Far East, and why did this Russian project fail?
