Cape Otto Schmidt - Cape on the shores of the Chukchi Sea, near the Strait of Long.
Discovered in 1778 by the celebrated James Cook. Apparently, before it was eaten by the aborigines. Described by the Russian navigator Ferdinand Wrangel. We then received the name of Ir-Kappeya ("walrus rookery").
In 1930, under Soviet rule, a secondary school was opened in the village.
In 1934, the cape was named after Otto Schmidt, an outstanding Arctic explorer.
Since 1962 - urban-type settlement. Near the village appeared military air defense base.
After the disappearance of the USSR, the village began to fall into decay ...
What now?
In July 2015, Spetsstroy Russia announced plans to equip a military campus and infrastructure at Cape Schmidt, which will be used as one of the basing points of the Pacific Fleet, which was officially established on December 1, 2014.
Who knows? Maybe life in these places will return.
