Don’t make the same mistakes I did…

I was used to losing my voice for a day or two after a long gig or a heavy recording day.

But my voice would always come back…

until one day… it didn’t.

I waited and waited and waited… but nothing 😖

After 4 weeks of not being able to sing or even speak I went to go see an ENT and I had never been more scared in my life!

I was afraid that Dr Wood was gonna tell me that I have a vocal injury and that I’ll never sing again or that I’ll need surgery…

Well, the good news is that I didn’t need surgery…

But the bad news is that I did in fact have a vocal injury.

Luckily within just a couple weeks of speech therapy my voice came back and got stronger than ever!

So here are some things to keep in mind to help you either avoid getting a vocal injury in the first place or to nurture your voice back to life after experiencing a vocal injury:

😚 Pay attention to what singing FEELS like. I promise you when singing feels good you’re going to sound great!

😚 Only go 1-2 steps out of your comfort zone. We have to step outside the comfort zone to learn and get better, but if we go too far out we push the voice over its limits.

😚 Watch your volume! More often than not we are working harder than we need to to get the sound we want. Decreasing the volume slightly helps to get a better result with less effort.

😚 Focus on releasing tension. This is exactly what helped my get my voice back faster than I ever thought possible AND helped me become a much stronger singer after my injury!

I want to leave you with this…

While the voice is very delicate, it is also incredibly resilient.

So don’t be afraid that you’ll hurt your voice.

Just listen to your body - if it doesn’t feel good stop, make some changes and try again ☺️
