Analog To Digital Converter Devices
Analog to digital converters are the most widely used devices for data convert. Digital computers use binary values, but in the physical world everything is analog. Temperature, pressure and velocity are a few examples of physical quantities. We need an external analog to digital converter to translate the analog signals to digital number so that the microcontroller can read and process them. PIC16F887 microcontrollers have an on-chip analog to digital peripheral, just like timers and USART. An on-chip ADC eliminates the need for an external ADC convection, which leaves more pins for other I/O activities.
The A/D converter module has the following features:
The converter generates a 10-bit binary result using the method of successive approximation and stores the conversion results into the ADC registers (ADRESL and ADRESH);
There are 14 separate analog inputs;
The A/D converter converts an analog input signal into a 10-bit binary number;
The minimum resolution or quality of conversion may be adjusted to various needs by selecting voltage references Vref- and Vref+.
The operation of A/D converter is in control of the bits of four registers:
ADRESH Contains high byte of conversion result;
ADRESL Contains low byte of conversion result;
ADCON0 Control register 0; and
ADCON1 Control register 1.
How To Measure Temperature Using LM35
Project Description
Temperature measurement is one of the most common tasks performed by the microcontroller. We are using LM35 temperature sensor for measure the temperature. In this project we will use the characters LCD and LCD is connected with PORTC and LCD control pins are connected with PORTD and LM35 temperature sensor is connected with the RA1 pin of the a PIC16F887 microcontroller. And the microcontroller operated with a 4MHz crystal.
