At the time of the Spanish Conquest, much of the Andean world was organized around kin-based collectives called ayllus that organized many facets of daily life. This presentation looks at the conditions under which ayllus emerged and suggests that there were also other mechanisms used to integrate Pre-Columbian communities until at least the Inca conquest. The site of Quilcapampa in southern Peru is used as a case study. Ayllus were twice introduced to this community five hundred year apart, each time resulting in drastically different outcomes.
