The story is about Emerich Jüttner, a man who lost his job during the Great Depression and struggled to find work to support his family. The search for Mr. 880 became one of the most expensive and prolonged investigations in the history of the Secret Service and the Ministry of Finance Service.
After a decade of fruitless searching, Emerich was discovered by chance when a fire broke out in his basement, revealing his counterfeit banknote clichés. He was eventually caught and faced legal consequences for his actions. However, the judges took into account his age and modest intentions, leading to an unusually lenient sentence of a fine and a short prison term.
The story gained attention, and Hollywood made a film based on Emerich's life, titled "Mr. 880." The film brought Emerich unexpected wealth, far exceeding his income from counterfeiting. After serving his sentence, Emerich returned to living a quiet and modest life as an ordinary American pensioner.
The story highlights the desperation and resourcefulness of a man trying to survive during difficult times and the unexpected twists that life can take.
