A black hole is an area in space with gravity so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. It forms when a massive star collapses, creating an extremely dense core called a singularity.
Surrounding it is the event horizon, a boundary beyond which anything that crosses is trapped forever. Black holes grow by pulling in surrounding matter and can merge with others.
Scientists study them by observing their effects on nearby objects and light.
