Our team had the pleasure of traveling to Jouques in the south of France to meet Jennifer Mottet, a specialist in protective vests for hunting dogs and director of the JM Artemis gun shop. During this trip, we were able to test the key qualities of this tool, which has become indispensable in the world of wild boar hunting. We wanted to ask Jennifer if this type of vest could harm our dogs in any way while hunting.

Can a vest harm a hunting dog?
A protective vest is a bit like a pair of shoes. If you put on a pair of shoes for the first time, it will take some time to adapt. A protective vest is exactly the same. The dog has never worn anything before; you put a vest on it for the first time, and it will take about ten outings for the dog to get used to the vest.

Isn't a protective vest dangerous for the dog on very hot days? Browning vests are equipped with thermoregulating protection that allows the dog to regulate its body temperature. You can also place the vests on the dogs regularly to prepare them or install them the day before hunting trips, allowing the dog's temperature to regulate. It becomes a second skin for the dog.

Can dogs swim with protective vests?

The new protective vests are made with Dyneema, replacing Kevlar, a material that absorbed water and could pose a problem for the dog. Today, with a Browning Protect Evo vest, this is no longer the case. Dyneema does not absorb water, and the dog swims perfectly.

Do the vests protect dogs from brambles in particularly dirty areas?

The protective vest is covered with a Cordura outer fabric. Browning vests have vests suitable for all biotopes. You can keep a Protect Pro vest for 4 to 6 years with almost weekly use.
