Make your embroidery waterproof 💧 (how I do it)
PROCESS FOR WATERPROOFING EMBROIDERY WITH SCOTCHGARD
Hi everyone, today I'm bringing you this great video.
1. Preparing the work area
Work in a well-ventilated area (Scotchgard produces fumes).
Lay down kraft paper, cardboard, or newspaper to protect the surface.
Make sure the garment or patch is clean and completely dry.
2. Preparing the garment or patch
Gently brush the embroidery to remove dust or loose threads.
If it's a hat or thick jacket, lay it flat on a firm surface so the embroidery lies flat.
For loose patches, lay them on a piece of fabric or cardboard to prevent them from moving.
3. Shaking the product
Shake the Scotchgard can for about 5–10 seconds to properly mix the protective compounds.
4. Applying Scotchgard
Hold the can 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) away.
Apply a light, even coat, moving the spray from side to side.
Avoid saturating the embroidery; it should only be slightly damp.
Don't linger in one spot to avoid smudging.
5. Drying Time
Let the garment dry for at least 3 hours in a well-ventilated area.
Do not touch the embroidery during this process.
6. Second Coat (optional but recommended)
For embroidery on caps, jackets, or patches exposed to water, apply a second light coat.
Let it dry again for 3 hours.
7. Final Curing
For a strong and long-lasting treatment, allow the garment to rest for 24 hours before wearing or selling it.
8. Reapplication
If the embroidery is washed, or if the garment is worn outdoors frequently, reapply Scotchgard every:
2–3 months with heavy use.
6 months with normal use.
PROFESSIONAL TIPS
Use Scotchgard Fabric Protector, which is suitable for textiles and embroidery.
Avoid applying it to materials labeled "dry clean only" without testing first.
For embroidery with metallic or very dark threads, test it on a corner to ensure it doesn't change color.
For structured caps, place an internal mold or ball inside to help them maintain their shape while drying.
