2nd of '3 Pieces for Piano' (Prelude, Nocturne, and Etude) by Bulgarian composer Veselin Stoyanov (Веселин Стоянов)(1902-1969)
Veselin Stoyanov belongs to the second generation of Bulgarian composers and was the son of the prominent musician and composer Anastas Stoyanov. Veselin studied Piano under his brother Andrey Stoyanov, who was my Professor's teacher. Within the year of graduating in 1926, he enrolled at the Vienna Hochshule for Musik to further his piano studies under Professor V. Ebenstein and composition with Schmidt.
Returning to Bulgaria in 1931 he began a career in teaching piano and theory, whilst performing as a conductor and pianist.
After 1945 he was appointed Professor of Composition and Music Forms and later on becoming the Principal of the National Academy of Music. In 1953 Veselin Stoyanov got the honour to become the Director of The Sofia State Opera.
His music consists of rich harmony and sumptuous sounding orchestration whilst using traditional characteristics of Bulgarian music including the traditional irregular time beats. He often composed large-scale works, including operas, symphonies, ballets and in various other genres, as well as three Piano Concertos.
From his work 'Three pieces for piano', which was composed in 1956 (and first published by Peters Edition), the Nocturne is the middle movement. It is in a ternary structure, lyrical in style with expressive and rich harmony, beautiful melodies and complex piano texture using three staves throughout the piece.
