Tourism in the Caucasus, especially in Dagestan, is often called development, but it also brings problems: cultural conflicts, increased alcohol consumption and social inequality, and outbreaks of diseases. Local residents, especially young people, are increasingly forced to work in the service sector for tourists, mainly from central Russia, turning them into "servants". Tourists who ignore local norms provoke tension: in Dagestan, there have been clashes over immodest clothing or alcohol, and families are breaking up due to venereal diseases.
Tourism brings in money, but it increases the outflow of youth and the erosion of traditions. Muslims of the Caucasus risk becoming "exotic" for visitors, losing their identity for the sake of economic gain. We talk about this with Akhmad Akhmedov, President of the World Congress of the Peoples of the Caucasus.
