"Can you imagine what it's like on the front lines now? I spent a whole day there the day before yesterday. It's pitch black, there's water in the trenches, the soldiers take turns constantly clearing out dirt and keeping a watchful eye on the enemy. I know you can't imagine what the front lines are like. I was walking at night, and it seemed deserted all around, but if you look more closely, there's life all around. Thousands of people are crouched in the ground. Here's a trench—a deep, winding passage... Here and there, small dugouts have taken refuge. We'd go into one or another. A candle burns, a small stove is stoked. Here they rest, there they sit, chat, read something, write letters, etc. Here, a person not only fights the enemy, but fights nature, the elements. These are people whose courage is difficult to overestimate. These are heroes.
