That the show has many nods to the work of popular author Stephen King? Midnight Mass is a terrifying miniseries from the director of fellow Netflix fright-fest ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, Mike Flanagan. In the first episode of Midnight Mass, a copy of Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot’ can be seen on the bookshelf of Riley’s childhood bedroom, while a copy of King’s other famous novel ‘The Dark Tower’ can also be seen in the room. Flanagan has spoken of his admiration for King’s literary work and the appearance of these masterpieces of literary fiction in Midnight Mass shines a light on the narrative inspiration for the show. In Salem’s Lot, a mysterious town finds that it has been unknowingly inhabited by vampires, while the Dark Tower features a vampire-hunting priest.
