[00:00] Intro
[01:08] A comb is essential
The first basic tool is a comb. You can't try to keep your beard even minimally tidy without carrying a comb in your pocket.
Okay, does a quick run of your hand to tidy it up do the trick? Okay… But constantly running your hand through it is asking for an increasingly messy beard. I've noticed that a quick comb keeps the hairs aligned for much longer than just running your hand through it.
And there's another advantage: when you get into the habit of combing, you avoid a bad habit of constantly fiddling with your beard with your fingers, which can cause split ends or knots.
[02:09] Trimmers are essential
The second tool that's essential for me is a good trimmer. It's a lifesaver in many situations.
Like, when I haven't been to a barber in a while, my hair and beard are completely uncut, but it's Friday night, the barbershop is closed, and I want to go out.
I'm not going to go crazy and give myself a haircut at home, and I bet a lot of people don't risk getting a professional beard trim right before a date either.
But the trimmer is a lifesaver in those situations.
You know what I do? I choose a comb that's a little taller than the one I usually use to trim my goatee at the barber, just to remove the excess, and I run it along the sides of my face, starting with the goatee and then going down, in the direction of the hair growth, to about jawline level.
This trimming of the sides already gives the beard a neater look and, in my case, removes that impression of hair that's overdue for a trim.
Then, without the comb, using a zero guard, I clean up the neckline.
Of course, if I have time, which isn't always the case, I use a razor, exfoliate my whole face, apply shaving gel, the whole complete service, right?
But the idea here is to talk about the essentials, the things that come in handy when you don't have everything else.
And then I get to my third essential tool. And I'm calling it a tool because, in the end, it is a multi-functional tool: a beard balm.
[05:06] Because hydration is essential.
Look, no one can come near you and say your beard isn't well-groomed after you use a beard balm.
It's the pleasant smell it leaves, the skin without irritation after shaving, the feeling of having just stepped out of the shower… For all these reasons, for me, beard balm is essential.
And also because – when we're talking about beard hair – hydration is something that can't be missing. We know, right? Beards are naturally drier, there's no way around it.
And when you incorporate beard balm into my daily routine, whether to hydrate the hair, or to use with beard oil (for those with longer beards), or as an aftershave, it becomes an essential item in the bathroom.
And I put the balm here because, for me, in the absence of others like shampoo, oil, and styling product – which are important for complete beard care – it's what gives me the most peace of mind knowing my beard is at least minimally well-groomed, you know?
But tell me in the comments the three tools that, FOR YOU, are essential for having a well-groomed beard every day. If you had to choose only 3 of everything you use, what can't you live without?
