You can describe the brain as a scientist with a hypothesis - that's what predictions are for. It is a belief, a guess about what sensations are going to happen, and why they occur.
That's where these emotions originate. And just like a good scientist,
you can verify and find out which hypothesis is correct.
Some may worry about me saying that the trauma is in your head, and I say that the trauma is in your head, and everything is in your head.
Every beautiful sunset you see, every hug,
you feel, every delicious drink you have -
it's all in your head. It is possible to recover from trauma.
This does not mean that traumatic memories will not resurface in the future, but they do not have to dominate over the predictions of your brain.
And the fact that you have some control over how to manage this content is a gift.
Your brain does not detect reality - it creates it. | Lisa Feldman Barrett
