I'm sharing my recent experience with Cloudflare to highlight some potential pitfalls you might encounter. This isn’t meant to bash Cloudflare—I’ve been a fan for nearly a decade—but rather to serve as a cautionary tale.
Here’s what happened and why you should be cautious.
Background
I’ve been using Cloudflare for most of my domain names, moving away from GoDaddy over the years. Cloudflare offers excellent services like global servers and fast routing, which seemed like a great move. However, I recently ran into a major issue that has left me feeling stuck and frustrated.
The Problem
A few weeks ago, one of my domain names with Cloudflare expired. Despite receiving notifications, I missed the renewal. When I tried to renew, I encountered an error message with no further information. My attempts to resolve this issue through Cloudflare's support have been futile.
Support Issues
Here’s a summary of my struggles with Cloudflare’s support:
Error Messages: When trying to renew my domain, I only received a vague error message with no details.
Blocked Actions: My account is now blocked from performing actions like transferring the domain name.
Unpaid Invoice: An unpaid invoice of $1.88 seems to be causing issues, but I can’t pay it because the link has expired.
Support Tickets: I submitted a support ticket weeks ago, but there has been no meaningful response. Automated messages and incorrect domain references have only added to my frustration.
Attempts to Upgrade
Desperate for support, I tried upgrading to Cloudflare’s business plan, which promises better customer service. However, even this attempt failed due to the same unpaid invoice issue. I’m stuck in a loop with no way out.
Lessons Learned
Here are my takeaways from this ordeal:
Keep Domain Registration Separate: Always keep your domain registration and DNS services separate. This gives you more flexibility if something goes wrong with one service.
Backup DNS Records: Maintain backup DNS records with your domain registrar. This way, you can quickly switch back if needed.
Consider Support Quality: Evaluate the quality of customer support before committing to a service. Cloudflare’s support has been a major letdown in this case.
Conclusion
I’m sharing this experience as a warning to others. Cloudflare offers great services, but its support is lacking, especially for non-enterprise customers. By keeping your domain registration separate and maintaining backup DNS records, you can avoid the issues I’m currently facing. Stay safe and plan wisely!
