"Aubergine" (2019) is a plant-based addendum to my 2016 collection 'The Egg Suite.'

As I phrased it in 2016, 'The Egg Suite' was inspired by the 'culinary versatility' of the (chicken) egg.
Since writing it, though, I've opened myself up to new information and have done a lot of reflecting. I've learned more about the injustices and cruelty involved in animal agriculture. I've finally taken it to heart; I've shifted to plant-based eating.
Therefore, I found it only natural and right that I compose a plant-based follow-up to 'The Egg Suite,' which aims to promote peace and plant-based eating rather than the consumption of animal products. "Aubergine" is the manifestation of that goal.
Musically, "Aubergine" frequently uses the musical letters found in its name (in order of appearance): A-B-E-G-E, or derivations of that set. I hope that the piece can serve as an aural backdrop on which you may meditate on values such as peacefulness, non-violence, and respect among all sentient beings.
