In Memory of U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl
U.S. Senator Herb Kohl (1935-2023). Democratic U.S. Senator from Milwaukee. Elected in 1988, serving 24 years. Chairman on the Appropriations and Judiciary Subcommittees, and Chair on the Special Committee on Aging. Also served as Vice-Chairman on the Judiciary Committee. He grew the family-owned business, Kohl’s grocery and department stores, serving as president in the 1970s. The corporation sold in 1979. During that time, Kohl entered Wisconsin politics serving as chair of the state Democratic Party from 1975 to 1977. He bought the Bucks for $18 million in 1985, then sold team in 2014 contributing $100 million toward construction of the Fiserv Forum. Kohl donated $25 million to the University of Wisconsin to help fund construction of the Kohl Center, home to the school’s basketball and hockey teams. It was the single largest private donation in university history.
