Vajrasttava - Mantra by Chogyal Rinpoche
Vajrasattva (tib. Dorje Serpa) is the purifying aspect of all Buddhas and is used in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Wherever the Buddhas of all times and directions unite their indestructible insight and purifying power, he appears in many different forms.
Vajrasattva is the joy state (skt. sambhogakaya) of Buddha Akshobya and thus belongs to the Diamond family.
The 100-syllable mantra (tib. Yig Gya) of Vajrasattva is practised in the Tibetan Buddhism to purify the obscurations and veils of the mind. The Dorje Sempa practice is one part of the Ngondro, the preliminary practices of the Great Seal, during which one recites this mantra 111.111 times.
The pronunciation and orthography differ between lineages. As an example, the Sanskrit term vajra is pronounced in Tibetan benza. However, in his mantra recitation Rinpoche has chosen the Sanskrit pronunciation.
The 100-syllable Vajrasattva mantra contains the essence of the 100 peaceful and wrathful deities, which are taught to be within the energy centers of our body during lifetime.
The 42 peaceful deities are said to be located in the heart chakra while the 58 wrathful deities reside in the brain chakra.
Actually, the 100 Buddhas are never separate from our body, speech and mind. According to the Buddhist teachings these Buddhas come from Vajrasattva, who therefore is called the ‘father of all the Buddhas families’.
It is said that each of these 100 Buddhas comprises one syllable in the 100-syllable mantra.
The short mantra of Dorje Sempa is:
ཨོཾ་བཛྲ་སཏྭ་ས་མ་ཡ་ཧཱུྂ༔
OṂ VAJRASATTVA HŪṂ
By chanting this mantra, one primarily purifies speech and mind.
