Ever since the early live bootable Knoppix Linux distribution (and maybe earlier) the ability to have a live version of the Linux OS on a bootable stick has provided Linux users with an easy way to take their favorite OS with them wherever they might need it. Even though these early (and later) bootable versions of Linux were available, options such as keeping the stick up to date and installing new software require a cumbersome process of remastering image files to make them persist across reboots.
Two such distributions MX and Antix which have partnered together to leverage each other’s engineering talent have taken a unique approach providing a fully-featured set of utilities that allow for persistence in many combinations of root and home partitions in addition to allowing for MANY options via boot loader. Some of these include where and how the persistence is stored such as fully in RAM, on SSD/HD, or the USB stick itself.
