Exposure bracketing can be a useful tool in the analog photographer’s toolbox, but it can all-too-easily become a crutch for sloppy shooting. If you don’t feel 100% confident in your metering process, you may be tempted to bracket all your exposures, thus doubling or tripling your film costs. And, buddy, I’m all for “shoot film, stay broke,” but let’s not take that to the extreme if we don’t have to!
With a complete understanding of light metering, you can get predictable and accurate results just about every time. Then you can save bracketing for the rare times when you really need it rather than relying on it for every scene.
But all that being said, there are times when bracketing can save the day, and it pays to do your bracketing right. Be smart about it. Bracket in a logical way. What’s the right deviation to follow when bracketing? Should you always bracket 3 exposures - lighter and darker? Can we take a smarter approach than simply throwing it on Auto-Exposure Bracket and coming home with 3 exposures when we only needed one or two?
I don’t often rely on exposure bracketing, but when I do, I’m sure to do it logically so as to minimize wasted film and time. This video will cover everything you need to know in order to bracket effectively when shooting with traditional analog film - be it 35mm, medium format, large format, or even polaroid.
