Around 1 in 8 pregnancies end in miscarriage yet this devastating issue is often little understood or discussed openly. Losing a pregnancy is different for everyone and affects whole families and communities as well as parents.
Prof Regan, a leader in women’s health with a special interest in miscarriage, talked about the experience of miscarriage, moving from the biology and physical experience to the emotional impact. She was joined by Julianne Boutaleb of Parenthood In Mind who has worked with parents and parents-to-be on various mental health issues including miscarriage for over 20 years and Asiya Dawood, founder of Asian Miscarriage Hub who shared her experience of miscarriage.
They discussed:
· Understanding miscarriage and possible causes
· Getting support towards a successful pregnancy after a miscarriage
· Taboos and stigma around miscarriage
· Psychological experiences of miscarriage
· Getting psychological support
