Lucy Letby
In a case that shocked the world, nurse Lucy Letby was convicted as the deadliest child killer in modern British history. A neonatal nurse from Chester, near Liverpool in northern England, Lucy Letby began her career at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2011. Letby's job was to care for babies in varying levels of care. Initially, her presence in the neonatal unit offered a glimmer of hope to the vulnerable babies she cared for. However, everything changed over time. During her time as a neonatal nurse, there was a striking increase in the number of babies dying and falling into critical condition.
Ravi Jayaram, a senior physician at Chester Hospital, expressed concern about the increasing number of deaths and seizures. Dr. Jayaram had observed Letby's behavior and suspected a connection to these tragic events. He reported his concerns to the hospital administration in 2015 and 2016, but his warnings were initially ignored. This negligence would have dire consequences for the innocent babies in Letby's care. As the number of deaths and seizures increased, Letby's unusual behavior began to be noticed by his colleagues. They observed Letby's indifference to offers of assistance in critical situations, even becoming hostile.
