LEARN about NATURE: Egyptian Goose

In today’s video Learn about Nature: Egyptian Goose we will share with you several fun and interesting facts about these colorful birds!

1. They are native to sub-tropical Africa south of the Sahara and Nile Valley, the Egyptian Goose was introduced to Britain in the late 17th century as an ornamental bird for the aristocracy. There are also wild populations in Florida, Texas and Southern California.

2. First and foremost they are not a goose, but a shelduck which is a cross between a duck and a goose!

3. Egyptian geese usually get away from danger by walking, seldom flying, except when they are surprised. Flying looks goose-like and heavy, with slow wing beats. The geese may fly together, forming an irregular V-shape, or they may fly in a long line.

4. Because the males and females are so close in size, the best way to determine their gender is by listening to their vocalizations. Males will make more of a whistle sound, while females will have more of a cackle.

5. Egyptian Geese usually settle in one pond, lake, stream or river for their entire lives, unless predators become too abundant or drought occurs.

6. They spend most of their time on land.

7. Egyptian geese were domesticated in the time of the ancient Egyptians, who viewed them as sacred, depicting them in their artwork.

8. The goose was believed to symbolize the soul of the deceased and was often depicted in tomb paintings and reliefs. Egyptian geese were also associated with the god Geb, who was believed to be the god of the earth and the patron god of farmers. They were considered a symbol of fertility and abundance.

9. Egyptian Geese are highly territorial animals. They are aggressive toward the opposite sex of their species during breeding seasons, and they will actively pursue individuals that enter their personal space in aerial dogfights.
