Again, William's two pieces were Nigun from Ball Shen by Ernest Bloch—as he tells in this clip, William first learnt this piece from Simon Fischer, who had himself learnt it from a pupil of Bloch—and Efrem Zimablist's Fantasy on themes from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel.
Sadly, William's breath-taking performance was not enough to get him through to the final three, but to be the Young Musician String Category Winner is, of course, a huge accomplishment in itself.
The good news for William is that, against stiff competition, he has now secured a place to continue his violin studies with Paul Vernikov in Switzerland from September (see the Strings Final video — • William Dutton: BBC Young Musician 2014, S... —for Vernikov's thoughts on William) and I'm sure will we see much more of William in the future.
