Poisson and Laplace equations: an illustration
Short description: We discuss the physical interpretation of Laplace's and Poisson's equations to familiarize students with the Laplacian operator.
We show that Laplace's equation expresses a simple relationship between the partial second derivatives with respect to the three spatial coordinates. In two dimensions, this relationship is expressed by stating that the curvatures of the potential variations in two orthogonal directions are opposite.
