Telescope and image stabilization. Temperature control and management. Automating data for science observations. These are just a few of the many, many challenges facing the SuperBIT team, leading up to the balloon-borne telescope's launch in April, 2023 from New Zealand. The preparation means long hours, big adjustments, and plenty of stress.
The plan for SuperBIT is that it will fly above the majority of the Earth’s atmosphere. If the launch is successful, it can capture images that would be so high-resolution, they would rival the Hubble Space Telescope.
In this clip, grad student Ajay Gill explains what exactly has to work in order for the SuperBIT launch to be a success.
Astronomy in Focus is a mini-documentary series that follows the amazing discoveries of our U of T astronomers from process to publication. This video is just a snippet: along with the rest of the SuperBIT team, Ajay's work will be profiled in the full mini-documentary.
