I use hollow core cotton blend yarn (less than 50g) and 3.0 mm hook here, this kind of yarn is durable and easy to crochet. If you use cotton yarn instead, in order to make a stand and durable basket, I suggest you to use double 4-ply or 5-ply cotton yarn.
