Bavarian Forest National Park
The National Park Bavarian Forest lies in the southeastern German Alps, close to the Czech border. The most important objectives of the park are the conservation and restoration of the ecological communities. Such a community is a tract of forest or course of a river together with the animals that live there.
The Bavarian Forest has been a National Park since 1970. At that time the park measured some 20,000 hectares. In future, this area will grow to more than twice this size.
In the last 100 years, a large part of the forest has been used intensively as a forestry area, and has therefore lost its authentic character.
The park automatically changes into the Sumava Czech National Park, formerly known as the Bohemian forest. Together with the Bavarian Forest, this is still one natural area, although the Germans and the Czechs have rather different ideas about park management.
