Learn to compose melodies by understanding their structure. We will study the motif, the phrase, and the musical period.
The motif is the smallest unit of musical composition and is generally composed of a few notes.
A phrase is the equivalent of a sentence in speech. A phrase can express a complete idea on its own. It is formed by several motifs.
The period is a unit commonly formed by two or three phrases. It tends to develop over eight or twelve measures. Like the phrase, the period can be open or closed. It forms different combinations at its endings, but most commonly the first period is inconclusive, while the second period ends with a conclusive cadence.
